Five Continents: The original book
Alas, I never did finish my book Five Continents, from which the vaviblog extracts are taken. A.S. Mishina, who worked with me as a typist and stenographer from 1938 to 1940 took enormous risks, during the war and the Siege of Leningrad, to hide the book, and although some chapters were lost it is thanks to her heroism that you are reading this.
My original plans divided the book into two parts, the first dealing with Europe and the Old World, the Second with my visits to the New World. Most of that second part was lost, leaving only Brazil and North America. I visited Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and other countries in Central America, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, not to mention Trinidad and Cuba. The full narrative of those journeys is gone forever, but I have high hopes of being able to recover at least some of the information, and I did publish an account in Izvestia in 1933 that I will be able to draw on in the vaviblog.
